Translation:
"And those who are taken in death among you and leave behind wives—they [the wives] shall wait four months and ten [days]. And when they have fulfilled their term, then there is no blame upon you for what they do with themselves in an acceptable manner. And Allah is [fully] Acquainted with what you do."
Tafseer / Explanation:
-
This verse establishes the 'iddah (waiting period) for widows, which is four months and ten days, ensuring respect for the bond of marriage and proper mourning.
-
The waiting period allows for the clarification of any potential pregnancy, ensuring the lineage of the deceased is preserved.
-
After the completion of the 'iddah, the widow is free to make decisions about her life, including remarriage, as long as it aligns with Islamic guidelines.
-
The verse emphasizes that decisions made by the widow after the waiting period should not be interfered with or criticized by others.
-
Allah’s knowledge is highlighted to remind believers that He is aware of their intentions and actions, encouraging adherence to these divine laws with sincerity.
