Translation:
And they followed what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two [angels] did not teach anyone unless they said, "We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learned from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And they learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But they certainly knew that whoever purchased it would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.
Tafseer / Explanation:
- Context of Magic: This verse addresses the widespread use of magic among the Children of Israel during the time of Prophet Solomon (AS). It clarifies that Solomon himself did not practice disbelief; rather, it was the devils who taught magic.
- Trial of Harut and Marut: Allah sent two angels, Harut and Marut, in Babylon as a test. They explicitly warned people not to misuse the knowledge of magic, emphasizing that it was a trial.
- Harmful Effects of Magic: Magic was often used to create discord, such as separating a husband and wife. However, its effects could not harm anyone without Allah’s permission.
- Worldly vs. Eternal Loss: The verse highlights that those who practiced magic traded their Hereafter for temporary worldly gain, leading to eternal loss.
- Moral Lesson: This verse warns against engaging in practices like magic that harm others and violate faith, urging believers to prioritize their Hereafter over fleeting worldly benefits.
